rian_sm_new.jpgSURFER moms rock. This is a fact; they get it. Moms that are stoked are awesome. Like when you get home after a long session and there’s a sarmy and a coke because your mom knows that you’ll be surfed out and super lus for a sarmy and coke. So, even though she knows that you went surfing instead of doing your homework like you promised you would, she still made you a sarmy just because she is awesome and knew that you would smaak it. Yes, she is a bit angry and disappointed at your apparent display of selfishness, but she remains awesome and stoked because she knows why you went surfing, duh, to get stoked yourself. So, even when you are being lame and selfish, she stays cool, and man that’s like three awesomes already.

Now when I talk of a surfer mom I am not talking of a mom who surfs but rather about a mom who is a surfer. Surfer moms are moms who are stoked when their groms are stoked. These are moms who do not live for themselves but lay down their own lives for the sake and best interest of their groms. And yes (darnit) some times this means I can’t surf for a week until my math mark improves, which of course will be easy to do since I now have all this extra time on my hands from not being allowed to surf (hehehe – I’m still going to sneak in a sly session anyway).

And agh ja, while I’m at it, I might as well improve my English, Afrikaans and art marks, well maybe not art. Art is way too serious to be taken seriously and that teacher just freaks out on some Abstract, Popular Dada stuff and won’t allow us to do what we want, which is ‘the art of being stoked and alive.’ Of course it’s an art, it’s a skill; it takes diligent practice and intense amounts of effort to achieve and maintain. And the reward is worth it.

So yes, to all stoked surfer moms; I honour you, you are awesome. I thank God for you everyday. Therefore mom, please remember; it’s not only your responsibility, but your motherly right to ensure that your groms stay stoked. If they are not stoked, chances are, neither are you. Remember you are not just doing it for them; you are doing it for you. Get them barreled while they are young then when they are teenagers you can just say: GET OUT OF MY HOUSE AND GO SURFING, while you enjoy the weekend alone with your husband; awesome.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Prov 22:6)
