THE last two weekends saw the Zululand Surf Association (ZSA) run their junior trials to see who will make the team and represent Zululand in the future South African surfing championships.
With only one more trials-contest to run this weekend (Saturday 24 July) before the final team is selected, the ratings are as follows:
U20: 1st – C. Coen, 2nd – D. Els, 3rd – B Colingwood.
U17: 1st – J England, 2nd – S De Lange, 3rd – S Rice.
U13 1st – T Du Toit, 2nd – L de Villiers, 3rd – A Theunissen;
U13 (Girls) 1st – Michaela Ceruti
This last weekend especially saw some awesome waves coming through all over Alkantstrand, with nice A-frames popping up from the Pipe to the Pier. Which is why at this point I would just like to congratulate the organisers for running such a successful event and would especially like to thank them for limiting the contest area and also for finishing so early (once they saw the tubes they made sure to finish as soon as possible – it’s amazing how effective and punctual people can be when motivated enough – nice one guys).
Although I did not watch all of the heats I did see a few barrels being expertly navigated and a couple of lips getting completely destroyed by one of the U20s riding a borrowed board. So if anybody has money lying around please buy that kid a board – he rips! And perhaps he can then turn pro and go surf somewhere else and sommer take that other notorious inside paddler with him – it’s time these kids grow up, spread their wings and leave this town.
And then on a completely different note – did you ou’s see that minimal rider snake that grom only to score the tube of the year? Man that was disgusting. And did you see that circus performer contort himself into an upsidedown backhand snap straight out of a sci-fi movie? Scary stuff. And did you hear all the people puke on the beach when that other kid got the second best barrel of the year, (the same kid who got snaked earlier)? That was not too bad, although he can still work a bit on his style.
