Team Northern KwaZulu-Natal are currently competing at the South African Bodyboarding Championships which kicked off yesterday at Ansteys beach on the Bluff.

The event is being held at roaming venues on the Bluff and Durban beachfront over the week from 1-7 October. The small but very capable NKZN team is made up of seasoned veterans and a few new youngsters who have not seen a lot of time in a competition vest.

One of the most experienced riders include multiple SA Champ and former world tour competitor Mark McCarthy who actually won the event the last time it was held in eThekwini. The team also includes Rheinhard du Toit who has probably competed in the most ever SA Champs events for NKZN. Jonathan Bernon, Chris Whitehead, Kobus Duvenhage and Neil Steenkamp in the Mens Division as well as Michael Cooper in the Master Divisions are other names that have been around for years and worth a mention.

Standouts from the team on Day One were Claudde Coetzer for great surfing and a close 2nd place in Pro Round one. Claudde is looking on top form. Mark McCarthy won his DK and Pro heat and looking solid. RDT got 2nd in both his DK and Pro heats as well as Nick Westman. Good to see Nick shredding on the Knee too. Jonathan Bernon won his Mens heat and looked the best in the Division. Chris won his heat too and Neil got a good second so the Mens division looking good. The Masters did their best in deteriorating conditions and the inexperienced Boys riders unfortunately did not do too well but have a lot to learn.

The Junior and ladies have yet to ride. We look forward to seeing what they can do and if the older guys can continue their form throughout the week.
