Matt McGillivray launched his 2019 World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) campaign with a fifth place finish on Friday in the first event of the season, the QS3,000 rated Seat Pro Netanya in Israel.
 
The 21-year-old from Jeffreys Bay, who won the corresponding event in Israel last year, narrowly advanced through three rounds where he finished second in each of his four-man heats, before he was ousted in his man-on-man quarter-final encounter with eventual event runner-up Tristan Guilbaud (FRA).

It is nearly Christmas, and time for the annual LIZZARD HURRICANE KZN SURFING CHAMPS 2018. This event is heralded as one of the most ‘fun’ family contests of the year. We see Moms and Dads, Grannies and Grandpas all surfing with their children. Anton Knoetze and his son Ben from Empangeni cannot wait for this fun contest! Beyrick de Vries and Slade Prestwich Finish Third and Fourth at HIC Pro in Hawaii

In an unprecedented confirmation of the rising presence of local professional surfers on the international stage, four South Africans reached the last 16 of the HIC Pro presented by Vans, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) event at Sunset Beach in Hawaii, with two going on to contest the final.
 
Beyrick de Vries (uMhlanga) and Slade Prestwich (Durban) finished third and fourth respectively in the final of the QS 3,000 rated event, the first time more than one South African has featured in a final of an event in Hawaii since the world professional circuit was inaugurated in 1976.

Breezy onshore conditions and a slight surge in swell greeted competitors on the final day of competition at the Billabong Junior Series Finale, and the first heat of the day – the U12 Girls Final was sent straight out. Gabi Herbst was the surfer of the morning with a few incredible rides in the mixed up conditions, including an 8.0 ride for the title. Sarah Scott was the runner up.
